Like other recipe box services, Gousto operates on a rolling schedule rather than order by order. A box is generated for each delivery slot unless you actively skip it, and the charge follows automatically.
This is the root of most unexpected Gousto charges. There is no order to remember placing, because you did not place one. The subscription placed it for you.
The cut-off is the critical detail
Each box has a deadline after which it can no longer be skipped or changed, typically several days before the delivery date. Once past it, the box is committed and will be charged and sent.
People frequently try to skip a box the day before delivery, find they cannot, and assume the system has failed. It has not: the box passed its cut-off, possibly a week earlier.
Charged for a box you did not choose recipes for
If you do not select recipes before the deadline, Gousto chooses for you rather than cancelling the box. Silence is treated as consent to a default selection, not as an instruction to skip.
First-box discounts taper
Introductory offers commonly apply a large discount to the first box and smaller discounts to several subsequent ones. The charge therefore rises in steps over the first weeks before settling at the standard price. Each step looks like a price increase but is the discount schedule running down.
Managing it properly
- Open your account and view the delivery schedule, which lists upcoming boxes and their cut-off dates.
- Skip boxes in bulk rather than one at a time if you are going away, since each slot must be skipped individually.
- Cancel rather than skip indefinitely if you have finished with the service, since a skipped schedule eventually resumes.
- Report problems with a delivered box promptly, as credits for missing or poor-quality ingredients are handled on a defined timescale.
If the charge is not yours at all
Recipe box accounts are occasionally targeted for takeover because they hold a saved card and deliver physical goods to an address the attacker can change. If a Gousto charge appears with a delivery address you do not recognise, treat it as account compromise: change the password, remove the saved card, and contact your bank.
