The amount Deliveroo takes is almost never the total of the food you ordered. Several components are added at checkout, and one of them can change after the order is complete.
| Component | Notes |
|---|---|
| Food total | Menu prices on delivery platforms are frequently higher than in the restaurant |
| Delivery fee | Varies by distance and demand. Waived for Plus members above a basket minimum |
| Service fee | A percentage of the basket |
| Small order fee | Applied below a threshold |
| Tip | Can be added or changed after delivery, altering the final settled amount |
The tip is the one that produces a genuine mismatch. If you adjust it after the rider arrives, the amount authorised at checkout and the amount that finally settles differ. See our guide to pending charges and authorisation holds for why the two figures can both appear.
Deliveroo Plus is a separate recurring charge
Plus is a subscription, billed monthly or annually, entirely separate from any order. It is commonly started as a free trial during checkout when the interface offers free delivery on the current order. That trial converts automatically.
A recurring Deliveroo charge on a month when you ordered nothing is almost always Plus. Cancel it in the app under Account, then Deliveroo Plus. Cancelling stops future renewals rather than refunding the current period.
Charged for an order that never arrived
If an order was cancelled or undelivered and you were still charged, the refund route is through the app in the first instance: open the order, report the issue, and request a refund. Deliveroo has a defined window for reporting problems, so doing it promptly matters.
If the app refuses and you are certain the goods were never received, this is standard chargeback territory. Your card provider can reverse a payment for goods not received, and the fact that the merchant declined a refund does not remove that right.
Multiple charges from one evening
Ordering from two restaurants creates two orders and two charges even if they arrive together. Adding items after placing an order can also create a second transaction rather than amending the first.
