What is EBAY on my bank statement?

This is a purchase made on eBay — the online marketplace for new and second-hand goods sold by both businesses and private individuals.

eBay purchase

✓ Legitimate charge

EBAY on your bank statement is a purchase made on eBay, the global online marketplace. Since 2021, eBay processes payments directly through its own system (called eBay Managed Payments), so charges now appear as EBAY rather than as PAYPAL*EBAY — which was the older format.

eBay charges appear on your statement for the full cost of the item including any postage the seller charged. If you bought multiple items from different sellers, each will appear as a separate EBAY charge. You might also see a charge for eBay Plus (eBay's subscription for free returns and enhanced seller protections) or an eBay Seller fee if you sell items on eBay.

If you paid via PayPal at checkout rather than by card directly, the charge may still appear as PAYPAL rather than EBAY on your bank statement.

Questions about eBay charges

The item I bought on eBay never arrived — what do I do?
Log into eBay, go to My eBay → Purchase History, find the order, and open a case under "Item not received." eBay's Money Back Guarantee means if the seller can't prove delivery, eBay will refund you in full. Open the case after the estimated delivery window has passed.
I don't recognise an eBay charge — what should I do?
First check your eBay purchase history — match the amount and date. If a household member uses your card, they may have made the purchase. If you find no matching order and don't have an eBay account, contact your bank to dispute the charge as unauthorised and ask for a new card number.
Why does my eBay charge show as PAYPAL*EBAY?
Older eBay purchases (before mid-2021) were processed through PayPal, so they appear as PAYPAL*EBAY. eBay has since switched to its own payment system, so newer purchases show as EBAY. Both are legitimate eBay charges — the difference is just the payment processing route.
