Amazon Prime generates more unexpected charges than almost any other UK subscription, for a structural reason: Prime free trials are offered at checkout, in the delivery options, at a moment when the customer is focused on getting an order placed rather than on signing up to anything.
Selecting faster delivery on an order frequently enrols you in a trial. Thirty days later the trial converts, and a charge appears that has no connection in your memory to the order you placed.
Monthly and annual are billed very differently
Prime is sold both monthly and annually, and which one you are on changes what an unexpected charge means. An annual charge appears once and then not again for a year, which makes it far harder to attribute when you finally notice it. It is also the larger amount, so it is the one that prompts people to contact their bank.
A useful check: if the charge is large and you cannot find a matching one in the previous few months, look back twelve months rather than three.
Prime is several services in one
Separate charges can also come from add-ons bought through Prime that bill independently.

Channel subscriptions are the most commonly forgotten of these. They are added with one click while browsing, often during a trial, and appear as ordinary Amazon charges afterwards.
Getting a refund for unused Prime
This is worth knowing, because Amazon does not advertise it. If you have not used your Prime benefits since the renewal, you can often obtain a full refund of an annual membership rather than just cancelling it going forward. Using benefits includes placing an order with Prime delivery or streaming something on Prime Video.
Go to Your Account, then Prime, then End membership. The options presented depend on your usage since the last charge. If the interface only offers to cancel at the end of the period, contacting Amazon customer service directly and asking about a refund for an unused renewal is often more productive than the self-service flow.
