What is CLEARPAY on my bank statement?

This is a fortnightly instalment payment for a purchase you split using Clearpay — the UK's leading buy now, pay later service.

Clearpay — buy now, pay later

⚑ Worth checking

CLEARPAY on your statement is an instalment payment from Clearpay, the UK's buy now pay later service (known as Afterpay in Australia, New Zealand, and the US — they're the same company). Clearpay is available at thousands of UK retailers including ASOS, Pretty Little Thing, boohoo, Boots, and many more.

Clearpay splits your purchase into 4 equal fortnightly payments. The first payment is taken at the time of purchase, and the remaining three are collected every two weeks. So if you bought something for £80 with Clearpay, you'd pay £20 at checkout, then £20 every fortnight for the next 6 weeks.

Clearpay is interest-free when payments are made on time. However, missing a payment triggers a late fee (currently capped at £6 or 25% of the order value, whichever is lower). Clearpay sends reminder notifications before each payment is due.

Questions about Clearpay charges

Why am I getting multiple Clearpay charges?
If you've made more than one purchase using Clearpay, each order has its own independent payment schedule. You could have several fortnightly payments for different orders all hitting your bank account around the same time. Log into the Clearpay app to see all your active orders and their schedules.
I returned the item — why is Clearpay still charging me?
Clearpay continues collecting payments until the retailer confirms your return. This can take several days. Once the refund is processed by the retailer, Clearpay will refund you for any payments already made and cancel remaining ones. Keep your return proof and contact Clearpay support if the refund hasn't been processed within a week.
What happens if I miss a Clearpay payment?
Clearpay will retry the payment and charge a late fee (capped at £6 or 25% of the order value). Consistently missed payments can result in your Clearpay account being suspended. Clearpay now also reports to credit reference agencies in some circumstances, so late payments may affect your credit score.
Is Clearpay the same as Afterpay?
Yes. Clearpay and Afterpay are the same service — both are owned by Block (formerly Square). The service operates as Clearpay in the UK, and as Afterpay in Australia, New Zealand, the US, and Canada.
